Forget Weekly Mags, How About 48 Hour Magazines?

Husband and wife team, Heather Champ and Derek Powazek, have a new innovative approach to print media. They’ve taken the traditional idea of a magazine, but rather than produce it monthly or even weekly, they’d like to get issues out in 48 hours, hence the title 48 Hour Magazine.

The first issue is fittingly tilted Hustle and is a full 60 pages long. The team started work on it with an idea at noon on May 7th and had the magazine finished on May 9th. The current issue can be purchased through HP’s MagCloud for $10.00.

The issue is chock full of great articles and beautiful photos. They’ve already received over 1,500 subscriptions for “Issue Zero”. Contributors include writers and photographers from Rolling Stone, Wired, Dwell, Gizmodo, GOOD, Lapham’s Quarterly, HiLoBrow, Fray, Paleofuture, and The Rumpus.

The editorial staff of 48 Hour Magazine, which was just a concept 14 days ago, can only express our deepest gratitude to everyone who put their shoulders to the wheel and helped us make this happen. From the dozens who edited to the thousands who submitted, you made the project possible. We called this edition Issue Zero because we knew it was an experiment. At times, it was all we could do to marvel at what the world was doing with a simple concept and a one word theme. We exclaimed to each other, “It’s working! It’s actually working!”

The couple clearly have the right network to pull something off like this with Heather previously the Community Director at Flickr and Derek partial founder of MagCloud. For now they’ve stated that this is just an experiment but they would love to turn it into “work”. If you’re interested in the process behind the concept be sure to check out their blog.
