Sharp Develops High-Definition 3D Camera Module for Mobile Devices
In an industry first, Sharp has developed a camera module for mobile devices capable of shooting high definition 3D video. Today, the company announced plans to turn smart phone users into 3D video artists as early as next year. Yep, this means you’d be able to shoot 3D videos right from your iPhone or similar device, turning you into a mobile James Cameron.

From the press release:
3D images are composed of two views taken using two cameras that simultaneously capture separate images for the right and left eyes. Consequently, a 3D camera requires peripheral circuitry to apply image processing to the two images, for example, to adjust color or to correct positioning between the images from the two cameras. Manufacturers have thus been pursuing designs that reduce the size and weight of 3D cameras and seeking ways to shorten their development period.
Sharp will begin shipping samples in July and plan to be mass producing these modules before 2010 comes to a close.
