Augmented Reality Blurs Lines between Virtual and Real Life

Imagine being on vacation in an unfamiliar city. You’re hungry and looking around for something to eat. The choices are overwhelming. How do you know which restaurants are good? You don’t want to waste your money or your hunger on something inferior, right?

Now imagine putting on your sunglasses and looking at a restaurant. Except now you don’t just see a restaurant. You see customer reviews overlaying the actual building. Suddenly your decision isn’t so difficult after all.

So where can you get these glasses? Well you can’t… yet. But you can download an app from somewhere like Yelp and use your cell phone camera in the same way. And it’s not even that new of a technology. It’s been around for quite a while.

Awesome Augmented Reality Soccer App

Just in time to latch on to the World Cup buzz comes this awesome augmented reality (AR) app. Users can kick around a virtual soccer ball inside the display of your screen using your feet. It looks like one of the most fun AR games we’ve seen so far.

We’ve seen AR put to good use with apps like London’s Streetmuseum application which takes you to different locations around the city using maps and GPS and adds a historical photo over real places in the city. Apps like the Kickball AR Juggling app represent a new sector in interactive gaming and we can’t wait to see what the brilliant minds behind AR gaming bring us this year.

London Museum Releases Cool Augmented Reality App

The Museum of London has released a new augmented reality iPhone app that allows tourists and residents alike to browse historical photographs in different parts of the city. Best part is… it’s free.

The iPhone app, Streetmuseum takes you to different locations around the city using maps and GPS. Once you’ve arrived at a spot, you can click the “3D View” button and the app will lay an appropriate historical photo over the live feed of the real world you are viewing. What a great idea for a travel app. Now, my only question… When will this be available for major U.S. cities?
