Wind Turbines Are Good For Crops Too

Wind turbines have been in the news a lot lately, especially as the push for alternative forms of energy increases. New news coming from a report from PhysOrg says that wind turbines are not only good for producing energy, they're also good for crops, too.

"We're confident that wind turbines do produce measurable effects on the microclimate near crops," Ames Laboratory associate and agricultural meteorology expert Gene Takle said. "In this case, we anticipate turbines' effects are good in the spring and fall because they would keep the crop a little warmer and help prevent a frost. Wind turbines could possibly ward off early fall frosts and extend the growing season."

Google to Use Wind Energy to Power Data Centers

Google Inc’s energy unit has entered into a deal to buy wind power from NextEra Energy Inc for the next 20 years to power data centers.

The deal comes less than three months after the giant Silicon Valley Internet search company invested $38.8 million in two wind farms in North Dakota, developed by NextEra Energy Resources, that generate enough energy to power more than 55,000 homes.

Google Energy LLC will begin buying wind power from July 30 from NextEra’s facility in Iowa at a predetermined rate, Urs Hoelzle, Google’s senior vice president of operations, said in a blog on Google’s website.

“Incorporating such a large amount of wind power into our portfolio is tricky, but this power is enough to supply several data centers,” Hoelzle added.

Google Invests $38 Million in Renewable Wind Energy

Google recently announced that they’ve made their first direct investment in a renewable wind farm project. The $38 Million that Google has invested will support two wind farms that together generate over 169 megawatts of power, which is enough to fully power more than 55,000 homes.

The wind farms, developed by NextEra Energy Resources, will reside in the North Dakota plains and will transmit energy to homes using existing technologies, reducing the local demand on fossil fuels.
